Pastoral Social de la Diocesis de San Marcos
Bishop Alvaro Ramazzini directs the 115 person strong Social Ministry of the Diocese of San Marcos. The Pastoral Social addresses 12 issues areas that they have grouped into three primary areas: Alternative Development, Organizing and Advocacy, and Legal Action. In addition to the direct impact of the considerable in-house team, they work with pastoral educational agents in the 31 parishes as well as broadcast programs on the ten parish based community radio stations, which reach over 100,000 people. Currently, the Pastoral Social is internationally known for its work in support of local Mayan communities who oppose the operation of a Canadian gold mine company that has inflicted serious health and environmental harm on the local community.
