The Global Workers trip to Guatemala was coordinated with Executive Secretary of the UFCW-Canada union, Victor Carrozzino. One of the objectives of his visit was to strengthen ties with the only worker-led organization that fights for the rights of Guatemalans who worked in Canada under the Canadian temporary worker program , AGUND (Association of Guatemalans United for their Rights). Today, Cathleen, Victor, and Miriam Ramirez, a representative of G&C Consultores , one of the members of the Global Workers Defender Network in Guatemala visited the AGUND office, about one hour outside of Guatemala City.

Defender Network Meeting

Today the Global Workers Defender Network gathered to discuss the formation of a Defender Advisory Committee, which will be comprised of 2 Guatemalan and 2 Mexican representatives. The idea of the committee is to have more input from the Defenders in our programmatic plans and to have an additional platform to share information. We also discussed an upcoming conference on temporary worker programs. Understandably, irregular migration is the primary focus of the government and civil society due to the extreme abuses and exorbitant numbers.
