Sept. 22, 2011 – Tehuacan, Puebla, Mexico

Today the journey led to Tehuacan, Puebla, a town 2 hours southeast of Puebla city, to visit with two organizations Comisión de Derechos Humanos y Laborales del Valle de Tehuacán A. C. (Human Rights Commission of Tehuacán Valley A. C.) and Comité de Derechos Humanos “Rafael Ayala y Ayala” ( “Rafael Ayala y Ayala” Human Rights Committee). Comisión focuses strictly on labor rights and defending exploited maquiladora workers; while Rafael Ayala does more general civil litigation, but particularly family law issues.

Beginning a two-week trip to Mexico, Program Director Griselda Vega made her first stop in Puebla, Mexico. She spent time finalizing the various meetings set-up for the rest of the week in Puebla (read subsequent blog entries), and for the next week in the state of Guanajuato.

Defender Network Meeting

Today the Global Workers Defender Network gathered to discuss the formation of a Defender Advisory Committee, which will be comprised of 2 Guatemalan and 2 Mexican representatives. The idea of the committee is to have more input from the Defenders in our programmatic plans and to have an additional platform to share information. We also discussed an upcoming conference on temporary worker programs. Understandably, irregular migration is the primary focus of the government and civil society due to the extreme abuses and exorbitant numbers.

June 21, 2011 – Santiago, Sacatepequez, Guatemala

The Global Workers trip to Guatemala was coordinated with Executive Secretary of the UFCW-Canada union, Victor Carrozzino. One of the objectives of his visit was to strengthen ties with the only worker-led organization that fights for the rights of Guatemalans who worked in Canada under the Canadian temporary worker program , AGUND (Association of Guatemalans United for their Rights). Today, Cathleen, Victor, and Miriam Ramirez, a representative of G&C Consultores , one of the members of the Global Workers Defender Network in Guatemala visited the AGUND office, about one hour outside of Guatemala City.

Meetings with U.S. Consulate

Executive Director, Cathleen Caron arrived in Guatemala City, Guatemala to realize a series of meetings on the Canadian-Guatemala temporary guestworker program, the Global Workers Defender Network, and to plan a conference in Guatemala on Guatemala temporary labor programs abroad.
