Chimaltenango, Guatemala August 25, 2009

Cathleen met with CEADEL a really interesting group in a small city on the outskirts of Guatemala City. Chimaltenango is at the center of Guatemala’s “maquila” industry, factories that are designed for export only and enjoy overly-generous tax benefits to do so. The maquilas are also notorious for child labor and sexual assault and other egregious violations of worker rights. CEADEL was founded to work with the local maquila populations, the majority of whom are women. With a staff of 14 they recently expanded their programs to include legal assistance.
