Griselda Vega, Global Worker’s Mexico Program Director was invited to speak at the University of Michigan Law School by the Michigan Immigration and Labor Law Association (MIA). MIA is a law student-run group that focuses on discussing the cross-sectional issues that arise in employment and immigration matters. Griselda was asked to come and discuss the work of Global Workers and its model, as well as alternative legal career opportunities.

The Global Workers team gears up for the first Guatemalan Temporary Worker Conference starting tomorrow, February 12, 2012.  The conference is organized by Project Counseling Services , Catholic Relief Services , Global Workers Justice Alliance, and the United Food and Commercial Workers of Canada.

Day one of the conference began with organizers Diego Lorente, PCS, Lucrecia Olivia, CRS, Andrea Galvez, UFCW Canada, and Cathleen Caron, Global Workers welcoming the participants and sharing the goals of the day and gratitude for the great turnout of 60+ workers participating to share their experiences.

Temporary Worker Conference Day Two
 
Day two of the conference, an open session, gave advocates, government officials, and academics the opportunity to learn about the various temporary worker programs in Guatemala. The day opened with a panel composed of Guatemalan government officials and civil society members.  This space provoked a lively discussion on why the issue of temporary workers had yet to receive much attention and encouraged the panelists to pledge to address the issue more deeply.

2nd Defender Forum – Inaugural event

Global Workers conducted its first training on U.S. employment laws in 2008. As we expanded in Guatemala and Mexico we held a second training in 2010. Now that we are growing into additional states in Mexico, it becomes that much more important to prepare our existing network within Mexico for this growth, and discuss with them what this means for increasing efforts in the country to combat transnational worker exploitation.

2nd Defender Network Forum – Day Two

Day Two of the forum was a shorter day, and included a technical training on Microsoft Excel, a presentation from the Instituto Oaxaqueño de Atención al Migrante (IOAM), a summary of Global Workers current programs involving the network, and a strategy session.
