CONMIGRANTES Meeting

Executive Director, Cathleen Caron and Policy Advocacy Program Manager, Omar Angel traveled to Central America to meet with allies, Defender Network members, and government agencies in El Salvador and Guatemala. Traveling through the region provided Global Workers the opportunity to strengthen existing alliances and build new ones, as well as to foster new initiatives.

While in San Salvador, they met with Doris Rivas of Consejo Nacional para la Protección y Desarrollo de la Persona Migrante y su Familia (CONMIGRANTES), a national council to protect migrants and their families, and with Ingrid Zuñiga of the Human Rights Office, both entities of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Based on previous experience with a visa fraud prevention campaign in Mexico, Global Workers and CONMIGRANTES are exploring possibilities of launching a similar campaign in El Salvador to prevent fraud in recruitment of temporary workers with visas for work in the U.S. or Canada. The campaign would empower workers with the information and tools they need to assert their rights before accepting a potentially fraudulent job offer.
