Meeting with Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs

In the latter part of the trip, Cathleen and Omar traveled to Guatemala to meet with Guatemalan Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs, Oscar Padilla Lam. Already familiar with Global Workers work, Vice Minister Padilla was enthusiastic to explore possibilities for further collaboration.

Specifically, the main initiatives identified as a priorities on this collaboration included the option to conduct trainings for consulate officials on temporary workers program in the U.S., production of “Know Your Rights” materials for workers going to Canada, and an analysis of the current recruitment regulation proposal that the Guatemalan Department of Labor is considering.

This partnership with the Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs is key to increasing protections for migrant workers from Guatemala and ensuring they can assert their rights and have access to justice not only in the country of employment, but in their home country as well.
