People’s Global Action – Day One

Today marked the opening of the People’s Global Action, the civil society side event to the United Nation’s High Level Dialogue on Migration and Development.

Although the United Nations has robust mechanisms to address refugee movements, migration had been little discussed until 2006 when the United Nations called together its first High Level Dialogue on the issue.   Seven years later the United Nations reconvened the dialogue to measure progress and plan next steps.  Since there is limited access for non-governmental actors (generally referred to as “civil society”) to the UN discussion, there is a parallel or shadow event, the People’s Global Action (PGA).

Global Workers invited Guatemala Defender, Miriam Ramirez of G&C Consultores to participate in the events as part of our leadership development initiatives with the Defender Network.
