Primer Foro de La Red de Trabajadores Globales, January 2011
In January, 2011, Global Workers held the first ever Primer Foro de la Red de Defensores de Trabajadores Globales (First Forum of the Global Workers Defender Network). Over 25 Defenders from 14 human rights organizations from southern Mexico and Guatemala gathered in Tapachula, Mexico from January 25-28 to evaluate the model of the network and discuss growth and development.
On the first day advocates from Mexico learned about the legal rights of migrant workers in Canada, particularly about the Temporary Foreign Worker Program and the Canada Pension Plan Death Benefit. Over the next two days, these advocates from both Mexico and Guatemala shared information about their respective education projects, as well as case facilitations. They reviewed the process for identifying cases of workers who have returned to Mexico and Guatemala after suffering labor and trafficking abuses in the United States, and the process for facilitating such cases as part of the network. This Forum presented the Defender Network with a first-time opportunity to take a hard look at itself and determine areas in need of improvement and strategies for advancement, and to recommitt themselves to the network. On the last and final day the defenders from Guatemala learned about Canadian labor law and the Temporary Foreign Worker Program.
