Global Workers Defender Network- Mexico Forum  - Day Two

Day two was marked as a day of planning, divided into three sessions.  The first part focused on how networks function in general and how they can advance common goals. Then we shared capacities of each organization as groundwork for what is feasible to achieve as a Network in Mexico. The discussion then shifted to the projects the Network wants to address in the upcoming year.  Such topics included advocacy with state governments to push them to take an active role in preventing visa fraud, identifying abuses and referring cases for labor abuses suffered in relation to the work abroad,  and trainings on various topics such as Canadian law, among others.

The second session was led by SocialTic, an organization in Mexico City that helps other organizations understand digital tools that are available to help advance their work. This dynamic session covered solid ground on the various free and low-cost online tools out there, and resulted in solid decisions about what tools the Defender Network will use to communicate better and be more effective.

In the final session we elected new members to the Defender Coordinating Committee, composed of 4 representatives from Mexico and then 2 from each of the four Central America countries.  A robust discussion ensued, well based on the prior discussions of the day, to improve the work of Defender Coordinating Committee.   We ended the day with each organization renewing membership in the Defender Network and celebrating two days of hard work!

The 6th Defender Network Forum will be in Central America in 2015.  In the future, we hope to have a forum to bring together the entire Defender Network instead of the regional division which now is necessary due to the high costs of bringing everyone together.
