Global Workers Justice Alliance signs Memorandum of Understanding with Michoacán State Government
Global Workers Justice Alliance signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Secretaría del Migrante (SERMIGRANTE) of the Michoacán Government with the goal of (a) securing access to portable justice for michoacan workers who are victims of abuses while working in the U. S., (b) educating temporary workers about their rights, and (c) prevening abuses and fraud during the recruitment of temporary workers in Michoacán. The MOU has been signed in coordination with our local defender from Pastoral de la Movilidad Humana in Morelia, Michoacan.
Michoacán is one of the Mexican states with higher rates of migration out of the state, and one of the most dangerous states controlled by drug cartels in the country. This MOU is one measure in our effort to address the needs of the migrant population, allowing us direct access to more communities of origin before they migrate.
The mission of the Global Workers Justice Alliance is to combat worker exploitation by promoting portable justice for transnational migrants through a cross-border network of worker advocates and resources.
Global Workers coined the term portable justice to describe the right and ability of transnational migrant workers to access justice in the countries of employment even after they have departed for their home countries.
