International Law Symposium: "Migration: Different Views"

More than 150 law students attended the event to learn about temporary migrant workers, recruitment, and migration journeys at the panel "Jornadas de Derecho Internacional - La Migracion: Distintas Miradas” (International Law Symposium: "Migration: Different Views" ) organized by the Law School at the University of Veracruz in coordination with the State Human Rights Commission (CEDH).

Recruitment Agency Regulations: Panel and Press conference

In coordination with allied organizations Catholic Relief Services, Jornaleros-SAFE, and Instituto de Estudios y Divulgación sobre Imigración (INEDIM), Global Workers Justice Alliance organized a day event to present the report “Reglamento de Agencias de Colocación de Trabajadores”, an analysis of the new recruitment agencies regulations in Mexico.

The first part of the event was a panel to discuss the challenges and violations workers suffer during the recruitment process. Along with Scalabrinianas: Misión para Migrantes y Refugiados, Centro de Derechos del Migrante, and ProDESC representatives, Cathleen Caron took part of this panel to present Global Workers Justice Alliance’s work, facts of the H2 visa program, and two fraud case studies to show how recruiters take advantage of workers applying to the temporary worker program.

In the second panel, Defender Network members Isabel Ramos and Cesar Alvarez participated with representatives of INEDIM and Servicio Jesuita a Migrantes. The panel discussed the impact of the reforms to Article 28 of the Federal Labor Law on the new recruitment agency regulation, as well as report findings and its impact on the recruitment process.

Global Workers Justice Alliance was invited to a conference of Latin American human rights practitioners in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Global Workers Legal Manager, Nan Schivone, attended the June 9-13 event on behalf of the organization to discuss strategies to tackle some of the most severe problems facing migrants in the region.

Montreal, Quebec, Canada - May 14, 2014

While in Montreal, Executive Director, Cathleen Caron met with various Canadian advocates and government officials to buttress developments of Global Workers program in Canada. While the United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW)-Canada continues to be Global Workers staunchest ally in Canada, we are now establishing more partnerships to increase access to justice for Canadian temporary foreign workers.

The UNHLD final day included Roundtable 4, Labor Mobility. Executive Director, Cathleen Caron was selected as one of the ten civil society members to speak from the floor, time permitting. In the end, only one civil society representative spoke from the floor. The challenge for non-government participation in roundtable two was twofold.
